Today I started in on the letters between Gilbert and Eunice before they were married. This stack are written to Gilbert from Eunice, headed with lines like "My Dearest Gilbert" which is super cute. I really want to read these as I go, but more than that I want to get them scanned and in chronological order, and then read them that way and get the story as it progresses.
However, since my eyes can't help reading words if I see them, if I happen to see any nice quotes I'll be sure to post them. :)

Day 5
In a letter from Eunice to her father, 1953:
Sharon gets ribbons tied all over her hair & a blanket pinned around her waist & says she is pretty & dances all the time. She surly has a lot of rhythum. Our baby boy is getting big fast. He gets that walker into every room in the house & all the things in each room. the magazines all come down, waste baskets go over, garbage comes out & dishes fall, cover comes off table & telephone thuds down. Life is getting quite exciting for him.LOL.

Day 4
Today I found letters from May Nielsen to Maggie while May was on her mission to the Central States Mission in 1926! From the postmarks, this mission included everything from Utah to Missouri -- so amazing! The postage was only two cents.
Wow! I found May Nielsen's patriarchal blessing! I feel too shy to read it yet, and that may be one of those things that I will only show to the Aunts and Uncles, but it's still really cool even to be holding it.

Day 3
I got genealogical records from Anya, so now I can finally get all these names straight!
I didn't know that Asahel had been married three times, or that Grandpa had a sister named Delva (or maybe I did and just forgot).
This is really an amazing journey. :D

Day 2
Finally got around to starting this project. I bought a scanner so I could work at home.
-Somebody getting a refrigerator is newsworthy ^_^
-So interesting -- she's talking about how meat when up from 10 to 15 CENTS a pound, and the grocer was sorting apples and asked if she wanted the ones with spots for making applesauce. Wow, the days before perfect produce.
-Hahaha they went to the movies with another couple, and left all the boys home in bed. "They were all asleep & stove out. Save price of a baby sitter. First time we four have ever gone to any thing liek that togeather." Different times.
Deciding to just scan them all now and save the reading for later -- things will get done faster that way, I think. :)
Well, I've been tooting along, and I just realized I can't figure out if May Nielsen is the same as May Anderson. Do any of you know? Where can I find a pedigree chart to consult during this project? Other suggestions/ideas?

Day one: The box arrives
So today, after I got home from work, church meetings, and grocery shopping, I actually put all the groceries away before I noticed the rather large box in my kitchen. A paper on the top said, "Brad-- Please deliver to Jennie. THANK YOU!"
I was not expecting a package of any kind, but it was obviously from family, so I opened it.
The box was full of letters and cards, neatly gathered into bundles and labeled. "To/From Eunice & Gilbert (to each other)." "Letters to Alice Allred."
Oh right! I remembered that I had told Uncle Darvel that I'd be willing to read and sort through old family letters -- and here they all were!
I counted them.
503 cards and letters and a few miscellaneous things like a picture of Gilbert in a paper frame. :)
The plan is for me to go through them all, marking down things like author, recipient, locations, dates, and any significant information like where people lived or testimonies or historical events, so the history in this treasure trove is available for the family. I also plan to scan everything and have my mom help me organize it so everybody who wants will have a digital copy of this treasure.
The purpose of this blog is for me to chronicle my journey through this project, and keep the family up to date as I do, describing my finds, transcribing amusing or interesting passages, and sharing my feelings about them.
